Example 5: VHF choke with ferrite rod core

This diagram shows a VHF choke with ferrite rod core from the standard program of a well-known supplier. According to datasheet the inductance is 120 µH +/-10%, the rated current is 2 A. The inductance of this kind of choke is relatively constant up to the rated current.

The Power Choke Tester DPG10 is helpful especially for dimensioning and testing of self-made chokes with cylinder core due to easy measurement of the saturation current. A accurate calculation is mostly not possible.

The diagram right hand shows a self-made inductor with unknown core data. The initial inductance of about 3.1 µH is relatively constant up to 15 A. In this diagram the secant inductance is displayed in addition to the incremental inductance.
