Test Leads

The application area of the Power Choke Tester DPG10 series includes small SMD components – the size of a finger nail – to large-scale chokes for energy technology uses, weighing more than 1000 kilograms. This implies that on one hand thin wires, measuring less than 0.5 mm in diameter, are used and on the other hand massive conductor rails up to 20 or 30 mm thick must be connected. The use of four-terminal sensing (Kelvin sensing) is mandatory; otherwise erroneous test results are unavoidable.

The standard cable set with all necessary cables for the operation is of course part of the delivery. The test leads for the four terminal connection to the device under test comprise a special cable for very high test current and a separate cable for the sense line. They are 0.6 m long. The alligator clips are laid out to accept wires up to approximately 20 mm in diameter.

A variety of test leads to meet the different applications are available as optional accessories. Upon request, we assemble customer-specific individual test leads.

PLEASE NOTE: All test leads with 4mm connector can be connected also to the 6 mm sockets of the devices! The test leads with 6mm connector can be connected only to 6 mm sockets.

Kelvin Test Leads

Kelvin clips make the connection of the device under test much easier since the four-terminal sensing can be realised with only 2 clips. Both jaws of the clip are insulated against each other. One jaw carries the measurement current and the other is used as sensing terminal.

The design of our Kelvin test leads is optimised since the uncertainties during the measurement – caused by the inductive coupling between the force lines and the sense lines – are minimised. Therefore, standard Kelvin test leads should not be used even if they are very massive!

Kelvin Test Leads for Extension Units

Kelvin test leads make the connection of the device under test much easier. The two jaws of a Kelvin clip are insulated from each other. One jaw carries the measuring current, while the other handles the sense connection.

Conventional Test Leads

Conventional test leads consist of two separate cables, one for the measuring current (Force) and one for the Sense connection. Consequently, four alligator clips must be connected to a single-phase inductor instead of two, and six alligator clips to a three-phase inductor instead of three.
One advantage of conventional test leads over Kelvin test leads is their better suitability for very low inductance values.
The KL11-4 and KL11-6 test lead sets are identical to the test leads included with the standard cable set, but they are 2 m long instead of 0.5 m. These longer test leads should only be used when necessary, as the measurement uncertainty could increase at very low inductance values.
